| About Acequias and the Valley of Lecrin |
| Acequias is a small rural Andalusian village with a population of around 180 people in the little-known but spectacularly beautiful Valley of Lecrin in the far south of Spain.
It is only 25 minutes from Granada, 30 minutes from the Costa Tropical with its selection of lovely beaches and 60 minutes from the international ski resort Sol y Nieve. This old Moorish village is set back in the hills and overlooks the valley of Lecrin renowned for its orange and lemon groves that give off the most wonderful scents. Fed by mountain springs, the lake nearby is good for swimming and lazy picnics. The village lies right on the edge of the Sierra Nevada National Park, an area of rich contrast ranging from the snowfields of Sol y Nieve to the lush vegetation of subtropical valleys. |
The
natural world: Home to many of Spains most precious animals
and butterflies, you can walk here for days without seeing a soul..Each
season has its flowers in Acequias almond blossom in February,
brilliant red poppies in May and bougainvillea in high summer. This part
of Spain also has some of the clearest skies in Europe. Shooting stars
are a familiar sight and the Milky Way really does look milky! Valley of Lecrin - The Valle of happiness - is one of the least developed valleys in Andalucia, where the donkey is still a familiar means of transport and the locals measure their olive crop in donkey loads. The Valley is extremely fertile, thanks to the snow which melts high up on the Sierra Nevada in spring and feeds the many rivers and streams below. The Climate: Even by Mediterranean standards, the Valley of Lecrin enjoys a very favoured climate. With Africa only a short distance away, spring starts very early and summer can last right through to late October. In high summer Andalucia gets very hot, but Acequias lies 1,000 metres up in the Sierras, which makes for pleasantly cool summer evenings. In Acequias you get Spanish summer warmth without those hot and sticky nights. Even by Mediterranean standards, the Valley of Lecrin enjoys a very favoured climate.
