Construction of Empuriabrava on began in 1968, and was substantially completed by 1980, when the administration of the town was passed to the local council at Castello d' Empuires, the ancient Capital of the Alt Emporda.  It is the largest residential Marina in Europe and there is a wide choice of restaurants - from traditional Spanish and Catalan to a wide selection of ethnic tastes. The town is adjacent to the Aiguamolls de L'Emporda Natural Park which, in addition to the bird-life it attracts, has a great variety of animal and vegetation species due to its brackish waters and close proximity to the sea. Over 300 visit the Park each year. Empuriabrava enjoys warm but not fiercely hot temperatures in the summer and a temperate climate in the winter. It is an ideal location for visiting at any time of the year as many of the restaurants and bars have year-round opening.  The town also has a small airstrip that is almost exclusively used for parachuting trips. There is a small cafe / bar by the airstrip, providing an excellent view of the aircraft movements and the Parachutists landing. There are many other attractions nearby, such as Aquabrava, which claims to be the most comprehensive water park on the Costa Brava.
