L'Escala lays two kilometres south of the famous Greek and Roman ruins of Empuries, and at the southern end of the Bay of Roses. This is a relatively small resort, retaining the feel of an old fishing port and is a firm favourite of local tourists.
Its beaches are some of the cleanest, with the shallow Riells beach ideal for young children and Empúries beach consisting of over 10 kilometres of fine sandy beach. This wonderful stretch of the coast never gets crowded! The Escala Old Port remains the home of the local fishing fleet who still use original Greek methods for catching and preserving anchovies, which are exported world-wide. Most of the more dense building has taken place in the nearby resort of Riells, to the east of L'Escala, leaving the town with more spacious villas and low-rise Apartments.
The town is renowned for it's gastronomy, and meals are of a high standard - from restaurants serving € 8 three-course meals to top-ranked restaurants with higher but still reasonable prices. Head for the area around the Old Port for the best offerings.
