Odd Catalonian Facts - Why the Donkey? |

But the only bull ring within this autonomous region is in the Capital of Barcelona, and you will find few local Catalans there - it exists purely for foreign tourist and visiting Spaniards from other parts of Spain (Catalonia is the most popular area for Spaniards to have a second home). Many foreign tourists leave early in the proceedings, appalled at the scenes that they are witnessing.
So
why the donkey badge? Catalans are stubbornly independent and also have
a great sense of humour and they reject bullfighting as a means of
enforcing their own national pride. So while the rest of Spain will
adorn the backs of their cars with Toro Bravo badges, Catalans could not
just omit them - they needed something to show their disapproval and
independence.What better than a donkey. Simply because it is a stubborn animal that will perfectly mock the mighty Toro Bravo badge.
Barcelona did once had a second Bull Ring - Plaça de las Arenas - but this is now a shopping mall - much to the approval of almost every Catalan!
