The
Spanish National Anthem -
The
only National Anthem with no words!
Despite being one
of the oldest National Anthem tunes, Spain's La Marcha Real is the
only one without any official words. On the death of the General
Francisco Franco in 1975, the original words were dropped as they
were considered to be inextricably linked to the fascist dictator.

More
recently, the Spanish Olympic committee (inspired by a rendition
of 'You'll Never Walk Alone' by visiting Liverpool FC
supporters) decided to hold a competition for new words to the
Spanish National Anthem.
The winning lyrics, titled ¡Viva España!, were
dropped within a week as Catalonia and several other regions
denounced the words as being too nationalistic. |
