This
enthralling Natural Park, which borders the southern side of
Empuriabrava, comprises nearly 2,000 acres of wetlands spreading over
nine municipalities between the Muga and the Fluvia rivers.

Good binoculars are essential (they can be hired from the Information
Centre, and although there are prepared circular walks, it is advisable
to wear comfortable walking shoes or wellington boots if it has rained.
The Senillosa observatory consists of four towers originally built to
store and dry rice. In 1966, one of the towers was converted into an
excellent 22 metre high observatory offering a 360 degree panoramic view
of the wetlands.
In addition to the bird-life, there are a great variety of animal and
vegetation species due to its brackish waters and close proximity to the
sea. Frogs, rabbits, moles weasels and otters inhabit the park joined by
wild boar in the winter months. An entire day can pass while exploring
just part of the park and it is advisable to take a picnic (and plenty
of mosquito repellent in summer!) even if your original intention is to
stay for just a few hours.
The Entrance and Information Centre is on the road into Sant Pere
Pescador from Castello d'Empuries (Telephone 972 45 42 22). The Park is
open from one hour before sunrise to one one hour after sunset, and the
best times to see some of over 300 species of birds there are early
morning and dusk, particularly in the months of March to May and August
to October, when the main migrations occur.
