The tourist resort of L' Estartit and the inland town of Torroella
de Montgri are home to the famous nature reserve of the Medes
Isles.
The
port area of L' Estartit, in the shadow of the Roca Maura escarpment
provides a relaxing scene, and some good bars and restaurants are
situated here. much of the coastline is dominated by high-rise
accommodation but behind these good villa accommodation can be found.
Although L' Estartit get busy in peak season, the curving, sandy beach
is long and wide, providing ample room.
The
main attraction for many is the Medes archipelago just offshore. This
comprises seven small islands, once the home of pirates but now a famous
Nature Reserve. In 1990, the Medes Isles were made a Marine Conservation
area and under this protection the Flora and forna have developed to
make this the most important site of it's kind in the western
Mediterranean. Fauna include Groupers, Sea Bass, White Bream, Red
Mullets and many others. It is now home to more than 1,400 different
plant and animal species.
Uncertified divers may only visit the Medes Isles with qualified PADI
instructors and individual dives are limited to less than 500 per day.
Various operators offer glass-bottom boat trips around the islands from
the Port and most also include a visit north of the Molinet Point to
view the overwhelming cliffs that rise from the shore and the navigable
tunnel of La Foradada.
