Situated on
the E-15 autopiste and N II road, just on the Spanish side of the
France / Spain border in the eastern Pyrenees, La Jonquera is
nothing more than a glorified shopping outlet.
This ugly 'town' is definately not a place to to take a vacation
(although there are hotels in and near the town).
The sole reasons for visiting are the range of outlets and the
prices. Eveything from petrol to alcohol, food to clothes - the
prices are lower than most of Europe and certainly cheaper than in
France. A holidaymaker in northern Spain will not save a great deal
after taking into account the cost of driving up the Pyrenees to
shop there.
The greatest benefits are for those from southern France and
savings can be made on virtually any purchase, making it a very
worthwhile trip. Parking is free and there are a variety of bars,
restaurants and tapas bars for refreshment. Prostitution is rife in
La Jonquera, particularly around the truckers parking on the
outskirts.
In and aroung the actual village of La Jonquera there are a few
attractions: The ruins of the castell de Rocabertí, a
mediaeval Benedictine monastery, and several Romanesque churches &
megalithic monuments.
A similar 'town', Le Perthus, exists on the French side, but prices
are somewhat higher and parking is not free.
