Llanca is situated 14 kilometres from the French border and 7 kilometres from Port de la Selva.
The old town was built on a small hill, a kilometre from the sea, away from marauding pirates. During the 17th century with piracy in decline, fishermen began to occupy the adjacent coast at El Port (now Port de Llanca) whilst the old town expanded into the surrounding countryside.
The
town ('Vila') and the port are now joined and have become one pleasant
urbanisation, extending along the coastline. The Villas, Apartments
Hotels, Pensions and shops in Llanca have a split personality - the
lively old port area and the more serene remainder of the seafront. There is a very good choice of beaches and coves either side of the main beach, which is almost semi-circular with fine, dark gritty sand. The water is exceptionally clear.
In the 'Vila', life revolves around the cafés and bars of Placa Major with it's central great plane tree (planted in 1870 to commerate the area's freedom from France. Here, the locals meet for sardana dancing during the summer.
