Situated at 370
metres above sea level in the Eastern Pyrenees, close to the French
border, Maçanet de Cabrenys has numerous fresh water springs
and although water-bottling is a significant employer, tourism is
the main income of the town. Much of it's 15th walls and
the three gated entrances still survive
Maçanet de Cabrenys is certainly one of the prettiest towns
in Catalonia. The little late Romanesque church of Sant Marti is
surrounded by quaint old houses, each with small vegetable gardens.
There are wonderful mountain views from the La Mare de Déu
de les Salines hermitage signposted from the centre of the town.

Find time to take a genuine Catalan meal in any of these or in one
of a number of small cafes and restaurants around the town, but try
also visit the the wonderfully picturesque village of
Sant Llorenç
de la Muga, a half hour's drive south towards Figueres.
