In 1848 first railway on the Iberian Peninsula was constructed, linking
Barcelona and Mataró.
It is 30km from Barcelona and the capital of the Maresme region and has
a rich architectural and archaeological heritage combined with a wide
range of shops and traditional Mediterranean markets serving its
100,000+ population.
Can Llauder is a Roman villa, built in the first
century BC for several wealthy owners and it had a classic decor of
marble, mosaics and stucco. It was used until the Middle Ages when it
fell into ruin but the remains are now well preserved. The old city
centre is circled by a 16th-century walled enclosure and at the centre
is the 15th-century Santa María basilica.
The main streets are now La Wrier and La Rambla, with notable buildings
such as the 17th century City Hall, the Baroque church, the House of
Caputxines and the Regional Museum of Maresme.
The town has a long standing seafaring tradition and has an excellent
sandy bech with a good promenade and marina. The beaches are usually
less crowded that those farther north in the more touristy areas.
