Calella de Palafrugell, Costa Brava and it's beaches |
A typical town of the Emporda, Palafrugell is 4 kilometers from the sea, where most of the holiday accommodation is situated. The coastline of Palafrugell has 12kms of beaches and coves which are all awarded the European Blue flag each year. The main beaches are Aigua Xelida, Tamariu, Llafranc and Calella de Palafrugell - all having trim profiles and friendly surroundings. The archipelago of the Formigues isles is off the coastline and in front of the Sant Sebastia lighthouse is the Ullastres - an area of special interest for it's marine life. Due to it's location, the culinary tradition combines the raw materials of land and sea, combining vegetables and cereals from the farms in Ermedas and Llofriu with locally caught seafood. During the period January to March, La Garoinada (sea urchin specialities) are served as entrees. In the Spring holidays, La Cuina de les Festes (Cooking of the Spring Festival) offers gala and seasonal dishes. The
Cork Museum (unique in Spain) celebrates Palafrugell's main industry
from the 18th to 20th century based on the area's cork woods. The Botanical Gardens of Cap Roig in Calella host The Costa Brava Jazz Festival during July and August. First held in 1990, it attracts the world best jazz musicians, including Stephane Grapeli, Ray Brown, Carrie Smith, Benny Carter and Hank Jones. The Spring Festival started in 1926 after the ending of the prohibition of Carnivals in Catalonia. The Festival lasts seven days with the climax being the Carroussel Costa Brava which parades through the streets on every Sunday during the season after the Pentecost. The area is full of paths and tracks, allowing the visitor to discover the countryside and megaliths in the Gavarres mountain range, or follow the course of natural springs.
