Portbou, Alt Emporda, Catalonia

Portbou with the railway station to the left. .

Situated a mile south of France, Portbou is a charming fishing village noted for being where cross-border trains change gauge from French to Iberian gauge.

The resort is three miles north of Colera and 37 miles south of Perpignan's Rivesaltes Airport (the nearest airport). Portbou has a large stony cove with small marina, two hotels and a selection of bars and restaurants.

Barcelona is 2½ hours by the RENFE train service and Paris is about 6½ hours using SNCF. The railway station is an inheritance from the days when Port Bou was an major border station. Now, the largest employment sector is now tourism.

The shops are plentiful in Portbou, particularly providing goods to satisfy the French border crossers: Alcohol and tobacco are significantly cheaper than the same in France.

Hotel Comodoro, Portbou The two major Portbou hotels are Hotel La Masia and Hotel Comodo.

Perhaps Portbou's most famous visitor was one of the greatest philosophers of the twentieth century, Walter Benjamin, As a stateless German-Jew refugee fleeing Nazi-occupied France, he arrived in the town en-route to America but was arrested by border police as he had no French exit documents.

Being frail, the police allowed Walter to stay in a small hotel in Avenida del General Mola, rather tan the local jail, with the intention of returning him to France the following day. During the night of 26th September 1940 Walter Benjamin died.
The death certificate stated ''Brain Hemorrhage'' as the cause, but it could have been suicide by morphine (which he carried), heart attack or something more sinister.

Using money he carried at the time, he was buried in the Catholic cemetery under the name of Benjamin Walter - disguising the fact that he was a Jew.

After 5 years, when the money had ran out, he was moved to an unmarked grave outside the cemetery.

Today, Porbou is a perfect resting point for anyone travelling from France to Spain and it is definitely a great destination in it's own right.

The town's excellent restaurants generally have Alt Empordan cuisine with a strong influence from neighbouring France. The sea is clear and sparkling!
