12
miles north west of Figueres in the Pyrenees lays the wonderfully
picturesque village of Sant Llorenç de la Muga. If you are
staying on the Costa Brava and wish to sample the real Catalonia, this
is the one place to visit.

Approaching the village from Figueres, farmland and olive groves give
way to twisting, climbing roads through pine forests (Click
here for route directions from ViaMichelin.com). Sant Llorenç
de la Muga is enclosed by 12th century, seven foot thick
walls with two gated entrances and watch-towers. It's old streets are
crammed with small 12th & 13th century
houses and the small church of Sant Antonio, whilst outside the walls a
medieval bridge crosses the meandering river Muga.
In the centre of the village is the small, independent Hotel Torre
Laurentii (www.torrelaurentii.com)
run by a charming husband and wife team. This outstanding hotel has just
seven bedrooms but they are decorated and furnished to the highest
standards. The small restaurant is open to non-residents and serves high
quality, fresh and inventive dishes. The wine list has some great gems
at modest prices.
As
a base for hiking or simply relaxing, Sant Llorenç de la Muga and
Hotel Torre Laurentii make the perfect combination. Whilst visiting or
staying in the village, it is worthwhile finding time to visit the
nearby village Macanet de
Cabrenys, a little further into the Pyrenees
