Stone Sculpting in Spain course

In the village of Fortià, near Roses, northern Spain

The Stone Sculpting in Spain course is a week-long sculpting holiday for people who would like to try for the first time, or improve their current stone carving skills. It is run from the Catalan village of Fortià in northern Spain, two hours north of Barcelona, in an area with a long artistic history including Dalí and Miró.

The base for Stone in Spain is Hotel Ave de Paso. Run by musician Franz van der Geenen and actress Regina Sigrist, Ave de Paso is a small hotel with a really comfortable, friendly atmosphere. The couple are accustomed to being overrun by artists and musicians as many of the local artistic talent congregate there on a weekly basis to jam together and talk. The hotel has its own pool and bar where we party and exhibit our work at the end of the week with the in-house band.

{short description of image}Your teacher is Natalie Staniforth who previously worked in the film industry, including Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings (* see photos below). Natalie has a very high level of technical ability combined with a love of teaching. She currently runs weekly sculpting classes in the local area for both adults and children. With 12 years as a professional sculptor (including Public art commissions in London and Surrey) and 4 years teaching experience, Natalie is well prepared to set you on the right track to finding both your skills and own style as a sculptor.

Natalie has years of experience creating models for the television, advertising, film and theatre industries. Many of her models will be instantly recognisable to millions of fans of Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter films and millions more have seen her models in commercials for Nat West, Sainsbury's, British Telecom, McDonalds, Toyota, Honda, Audi, and Pernod.

What's Included: The Stone Sculpting in Spain course includes: bed and breakfast and all meals taken in (or provided by) the Hotel You will be expected to pay for at least one evening meal in a restaurant and, if you chose to, one lunch out. Drinks are available to buy in the Hotel all day. Beer €2, soft drinks €1.50. All fuel costs are inclusive on organized trips and to and from the airport on the allotted date.

People arriving on different days have the option of being collected from Figueres Train station or Roses bus station. Bicycles are available for exploring the local area. Tools: You will have the use of a small set of sculpting starter tools which will be yours during the week. You have the option to buy them at a reduced rate at the end of the week if you chose to continue carving after the holiday. (We feel sure you will!).

Not included is the shipping of any sculptures back to your own country. Small piece can often be taken on the plane but remember anything large will have to be shipped. Think about this whilst choosing your stone!!

Further Information:

Longer stays or alternative accommodation If you would like to stay longer than one week in the region, (and we recommend you do!) we can arrange alternative accommodation in Roses and the surrounding area.. Alternatively, if you would like to do the course but would prefer to stay in a self catering apartment, please let us know and we can work something out for you.

Physical fitness: Stone sculpting is hard work, but how hard depends on the size of the piece and the type of stone. If you would like to carve but are not very strong we can provide a soft soap stone and make it a small piece. I prefer to work standing up but you don't have to, some of my older students do sit to work and manage fine. However having said that remember that some days you will be working for 6 to 8 hours and you must be able to swing a small hammer for that long or you may feel you have not achieved much by the end of the week.

Also this is a dusty art and people with breathing problems need to be aware of this, and although masks will be provided, it can get hot wearing them and people often prefer to work without
